This series was inspired by two books...'The Search' and 'Carolina Moon.' Both by the incredible Nora Roberts.
Episode One
Demons
She drew in a ragged breath as she stepped off the plane. She had been away for three years now and everything still looked exactly the same as when she left it. Her heart still hurt...and the last thing she wanted was to be here...and yet...
Something was pulling her back here...someone was nudging ever so slightly...someone she had loved and lost.
"I don't know what you want from me...I don't even know why I'm here...haven't we lost enough already?"
Her voice was as weak and unsteady as her legs were...but she managed to find her way to the cab. She was lost in thought on her way to the cemetery... lost and unsure of everything. Her life had completely shattered that day...she never quite regained her footing.
"Why did you have to die...why wasn't it me," she wondered silently, as she stepped out into the cool air of the town she had grown up in. The town that had never quite felt like home...not since the day that still haunted her...the day she found her best friend dead...murdered...just another statistic of a killer that had gone on a murdering spree...
And it could have been her...should have been her...would have been her if she hadn't sent her in her place...because she had been waylaid for reasons she couldn't even remember now...and she had gone without question...gone to the place where they were supposed to meet with...with who...some guy she had met online...someone who was supposed to...he stalked her, she realized...stalked her so he could know her exact location...he had met her with the intention of killing her...and Mia had walked right into that trap because she had asked her to check him out first...
"Dear God, what have I done," she cried for the millionth time. She now stood in front of her grave with the useless flowers in her hands. "What do you give someone when you're responsible for their death? What do you give the person you loved like a sister who died because of you?"
She ran her fingers over the name etched in stone and it was only when she turned around at the sound of her name when she realized she wasn't alone.
"Hello Bo," she whispered, as he pulled her into a tight hug. "It's been a while hasn't it?"
"Too long...I've been thinking about you a lot in the last few years...wondering where you were...how you were..."
"You too," she said.
"Terrible," they both said in unison. Today was the anniversary of Mia's death...she was Bo's sister and her best friend. It was a loss they both shared...a loss that had shaped their lives for the last three years. They had both tried to deal with the injustice of having her killer walk free...and they had both failed.
What neither of them realized was that in different ways they suffered the same diagnosis...post traumatic stress...She lived with the nightmares of survivors guilt...he lived with the demons of war being relived through his sisters murder...
and neither of them had been able to move on from that day...the day when death ripped their worlds apart...
