Chapter 55
Gia was nervous about riding in the car with Jason, AJ and Emily. It was just a car ride! But she couldn’t get rid of the feeling of intimacy because of their close proximity.
Jason sat in the backseat with Gia but only, after he had insisted that Emily, ride in the front passenger’s seat. Emily had gleefully taken the opportunity at first to declare that Jason was the older and should therefore ride in the front. She would keep Gia's company in the back or either Gia should ride in the front seeing how she was their guest. Her sole purpose was simply to torture Jason and it was obvious to the four of them. After a little haggling, he’d told her in no uncertain terms that he was sitting with Gia in the back and that was final.
Now as they sat in comfort for the ride back into town and ultimately the Quartermaine estate Gia tried to quail her nervousness. She looked out the window at the passing scenery but she could feel Jason’s eyes on her as they rode along. She had so far avoided looking at him because she knew he was still agitated about their discussion at the track.
“Gia?” He asked softly as he moved closer and grasped her hand.
She turned in his direction knowing she couldn’t ignore him, not without drawing the attention of the occupants in the front and that was something she wanted to avoid doing if at all possible.
“Yes?” She squeezed his hand.
He leaned into her ear and asked softly, “Are you all right?”
She nodded then responded. “Yes I am.” She tenderly touched his face, which was resting on her shoulder.
“You’re sure?” He rubbed the fingers in his clasped hand. She seemed to have stopped trembling but he couldn’t forget how she had reacted and her fear.
“Yes. I’m fine. Don’t worry.”
“Okay, I won’t.” He pulled back but held on to her hand.
They sat silently looking at each other and even though he’d moved, away Gia could tell that he had his doubts.
Kelly’s
Bobbie held the door open and her three charges filed past her like prisoners on work detail. They were silent just like they had been on the way in the car. Zander and Lark had shared the back seat but with the exception of a few stolen glances that passed between them, they didn’t have a conversation.
It had not been initially silent but once Carly’s frantic explanation had fallen on deaf ears and Bobbie’s knowing gaze had seared her a couple of times, the silence had been a welcomed compromise.
She pointed the three of them to the counter and told them to order something to eat. She reminded Lark to make sure she finished her meal before she started her shift. Lastly she turned stern eyes on them and without her having to utter another word, they knew that this was not over.
They gave a curious Elizabeth their food orders and watched Bobbie as she disappeared into the office. As soon as she was out of sight, in unison they all gave a relieved breath.
Zander turned to Carly, “Thanks a lot cuz!” He said it low, not sure if Bobbie could still hear him even at such a low volume.
“Hey, I was trying to help.” She whispered back at him in her defense.
“Zander what were you doing there?” Lark touched his arm finally able to ask him some questions. “Carly did you arrange for him to be there?” She looked over at her friend still not sure what exactly had happened over the last hour.
“Of course. I wanted you two to see each other.” Carly said with a smug smile. Things had gone a little rougher than planned and she knew she was in a world of trouble but this had all been to help a case of love stay on track. It was worth the upcoming lecture. “Don’t worry, Mama won’t stay mad long. And anyway she is mad at me and knows you had nothing to do with it Lark.”
“She is mad at me too.” Zander frowned still perplexed by his aunt’s attitude. “And I don’t understand it?”
Things were starting to click in Lark’s head. “I think I know why.” She said softly turning disturbed eyes to look at Zander.
“Hey,” he said softly seeing her distress. He reached out and brushed her hair then clasped her hand, “don’t worry, there is no way Aunt Bobbie would blame you for anything. She knows you had nothing to do with this.”
“That’s right.” Carly added her reassurance.
“I know. It’s not that…Zander it’s something…I think it has something to do with my Dad.”
“What?”
“I think he told Ms. Spencer that we are not to see each other when he agreed to let me tag alone with them this morning.”
“But it’s still not your fault…” he was insistent as he threw an angry glance at Carly for the collapse of one of her schemes as usual.
“I know but she probably thinks my Dad would be mad.”
“I see your point. But your Dad had always been fair. He wouldn’t blame Aunt Bobbie.” Zander offered in reassurance.
“No. But he might get madder at you and…” she shrugged not wanting to complete her theory.
“And continue to insist I’m not to come around.” He sighed now understanding the full impact of this one failed plan.
“Exactly.”
“Great.” He rolled his eyes in Carly’s direction to hammer home that he blamed her.
“I don’t think that is going to happen.” Carly waved them off not as concerned as they were. “You two are just borrowing trouble where there is none.”
“I don’t know Carly.” Lark said fatalistically. “My father was disappointed in me about what happened before and this just might add fuel to the fire.”
“You can’t think that way.” Carly continued to doubt that outcome. “Besides Mama may not even tell him.”
Bobbie sat at her desk mentally chastising her daughter for her scheming and plotting. She would have to deal with Carly later after she, Bobbie stopped being angry and confused.
She was extremely angry and disappointed but there was also a small sliver of nostalgic amusement at Carly’s behavior and that was part of her confusion. This was so like her father, Scott when they had been teenagers. Carly’s intentions were good but it was full steam ahead without thinking about the negative aspects of what could happen. She couldn’t have had any idea the hornet’s nest her actions could possibly have stirred up but then that was Carly, just like her father before her. Like father, like daughter.
Now it was up to Bobbie to do the right thing but this was not something she wanted to do over the phone. Frank had entrusted Lark to her care and had laid down the rules. They had been broken on her watch so this was something she had to tell him in person. She owed him that much.
She knew that if it was anyone else she would just tell what had happened and apologize but this wasn’t anyone else. It had been hard enough to pick up Lark this morning but luckily, she hadn’t seen him because according to Lark, he’d been in the middle of fixing a pipe under the kitchen sink when they had arrived. On the drive over, she’d braced herself to see his handsome face and to fight off the attraction she felt grow every time she saw him. When it didn’t happen she’d been relieved but also deflated that he hadn’t come out to see Lark off.
Now she needed to see him in person and her anxiousness from earlier in the day was back in full force.
Frank stretched his legs out as he got comfortable on the couch, picked up a magazine from the table and started flipping through it. After a good 10 minutes, it was obvious that it wasn’t going to hold his attention so he tossed it back on the table.
He’d done everything he’d planned to do this morning around the house. The kitchen pipe was fixed, he done some laundry and the truck was washed, waxed and the oil changed. He was at loose ends and his mind wanted to go exploring.
No, that wasn’t true. His mind wanted to think about what or who had occupied his thoughts all day. Bobbie Spencer. He didn’t know why he couldn’t get her off of his mind. It wasn’t just that she had called that morning; no, she was the only woman he thought about these days. She was the only woman that held his interest.
He was a gainfully employed and he thought attractive man who he wasn’t ashamed to admit got a respectable share of female attention. In fact, he still got female attention but he wasn’t interested. Only a redhead diner-owning nurse held his interest.
He swung his legs off of the couch to sit up.
There he was finally admitting it to his self.
“So now Frank what are you going to do about it?” He asked. He had never been a man to back away from a challenge or give up because something was too difficult and he wasn’t going to become one at this point in his life. He had been beating around the bush for weeks now not even being honest with himself. No longer. It was time to go after what he wanted. Bobbie Spencer.
