Here is the 2nd part of Chapter 2, as I said this board won't let me post it all at once:
He strode across the lobby and into Kate’s office, “sorry I had to go over your…..,” he started to say then ducked as the stapler narrowly missed beaning him in the head.
“Whoa lady,” he got out and then ducked again when the water glass followed suit and smashed against the wall behind him. “You’re mad right?” he laughed and held his hands up in surrender when he saw the raw fury in Kate’s face.
“Kate look, I knew that you wouldn’t listen to me so I had to go to John. Now that he knows and we have to work together, we can get this thing taken care of.”
“How - dare - you,” Kate said very slowly with barely restrained fury, “how dare you go to John, my boss, with this before discussing it with me? Do you have any idea what an idiot I felt like in that office just now? I feel like I was just called into the principal’s office Roman. What is this high school? You don’t get your own way and I get detention?”
“OK, I’ll give you the going over your head thing. I should have discussed this with you and told you that I was going to John, but I didn’t and there’s nothing that I can do about that now, so let’s just move on.” Roman watched her carefully and saw a little bit of the anger leave her face at his admission, quickly deciding to go for broke he asked, “Soo, do you have the note?”
Kate tore her gaze away from his, leaned down to the garbage can and snatched the note out, thrusting it at him. “Here you go, read it and weep,” she said sarcastically.
Roman spared her a quick glance before taking the note from the envelope. He noted the same red paper and what looked to be the same typeface as the other before reading the words, “Were the others like this?” Roman asked quietly.
“Yeah pretty much,” Kate said shortly.
“Kate you need to co-operate with me on this, it’ll go much easier if you do.” He tried to keep the condescension out of his voice, but Kate picked up on it immediately and she finally snapped.
“Don’t you dare patronize me Roman Brady! I might be forced to work with you on this but that doesn’t by any stroke of the imagination mean that I’m going to like it or deserve to be spoken to like that by you or anyone for that matter!”
“Ok ok, take it easy. I’m sorry,” Roman got in, but Kate didn’t even hear him, she had worked up a fine head of steam and there was no stopping her now.
“And another thing, get this through your head Kojak,” Kate snarled, pointing her finger at him and poking him in the chest. She missed the first hint of anger flash across his face and darken his eyes, but she wouldn’t have cared anyway. “You may have found a way to wheedle yourself into my life, but this is the only area that you will ever have contact with. Once I walk out those doors at night, my life is my own – am I understood?”
“Oh I understand Lady! I understand a hell of a lot more than you think I do!” Roman shot back instantly. “You think I brought all of this to John’s attention to infiltrate your life? Well get over it Kate! I brought this to John’s attention because it is my job, you are a citizen of Salem and it is my duty to protect you. You are being harassed by an unknown person and I’m the lucky one who has signed on to keep you safe!”
“You expect me to belief that you’re doing this because of your badge? Because it’s your sworn duty? Oh come on Roman, you have to be on something if you think I’m going to buy that. You’re the police captain; this detail doesn’t exactly fall under the duties of a captain in the police force does it? So what is the real reason Roman? What is the reason that you’re standing here in front of me arguing over a couple of insignificant notes that I got?”
“You wanna know the reason?” Roman shouted back having lost his temper completely.
“Yeah I do!”
“This is the reason!” Roman got out and grabbed her arms pulling her flush against him. Kate saw his intention a split second before his mouth came down on hers and only had time for a quick breath, which was taken away as soon as their mouths touched.
The struggle she put up was token at best and deep down, she knew it what’s more she could sense that Roman knew it too. He held her tight to him, not giving her a chance to pull away, until he felt the hands that were clenched into fists on his chest open and relax. He loosened his hold on her arms and moved to her back, kneading gently as he changed the angle of his head to take them both deeper.
Kate told herself to fight it, but try as she might, she couldn’t. As soon as she felt his hands move to her back and caress, she was done. Her hands moved up his chest to snake around his neck and she kissed him back, giving as good as she got.
Roman gentled the kiss; requested instead of demanded entry into her mouth and couldn’t help the small sigh that escaped when she granted it without hesitation. He suppressed the urge to take the kiss even deeper still, knowing that neither one of them was quite ready for that yet, and he eased back slowly to look at her.
Seeing the surprised look on her face and knowing that his own face carried the same expression, he pushed his luck and reached a finger up to trail it along her cheek. “That’s why I’m here,” he said in a low voice, “Deny it all you want Kate, but that kiss just proved without a doubt that there is something between us. Call it chemistry, heat, fire, or good old-fashioned lust, call it whatever you want but I’m not going to let anything happen to you until we figure out what ‘it’ is.”
Moving his finger to rest under her chin, he forced her head up so that she met his eyes. Seeing the dazed look in her eye, he continued softly, “is it so hard for you to believe that someone could honestly care about you?”
“Yeah, I guess it is.” Kate said just as softly.
“Well get used to it lady. Because, for the time being at least, you’re stuck with me.” Roman finished and moved away from her to grab the note off her desk. “Let me know if you get anymore,” he said firmly looking her right in the eye and turning to the door.
With a soft click, the door closed and he was gone, leaving Kate standing alone in the middle of the room wondering what exactly had just happened. “More importantly, what am I going to do about it?” she murmured.
Returning to her desk and flopping down in the chair, Kate reached for the top folder on her desk and started back to work, determined to put Roman Brady and her mysterious secret admirer out of her mind. She worked for hours, long after the other employees had gone home, before finally glancing at her watch. Taking a deep breath and rolling her head around to loosen the kink in her neck, she stood and began organizing her desk, pleased with herself for having worked through a good chunk of paperwork. Grabbing some files to take home with her, she stuffed them in her briefcase and picked up her coat.
The elevator doors opened instantly and Kate stepped inside. Pressing the button for the garage, she leaned back against the wall with a grateful sigh. Silently she complimented herself for managing to put Roman Brady and everything else out of her mind. The elevator doors slid open and Kate’s walked out into the deserted garage, her heels echoed in the quiet stillness and she suppressed an involuntary shudder. Telling herself that she was silly, she continued on but picked up her pace a bit. She rounded the corner of her car and jerked to a halt. Her briefcase landed with a thud at her feet and she stared. On her windshield was a perfect red rose, and from the short distance away, she could clearly see the ribbon with two words boldly printed on it, "be mine."
